2 Disc Set! Our second best selling DVD!

D.C. Waldorf- Beyond Thrashing & Bashing Flint Knapping: Next Steps DVD. In October of 2007, videographer and interviewer Charles Eaton [Making the Type IV Danish Dagger] made another visit to the workshop of D.C. Waldorf armed with a list of questions that had bothered him and many other beginning to intermediate knappers. To answer these questions, D.C. opened his bag of tools and tricks while the camera was rolling and Charles got his answers! This, first time ever, two disc set is the result of that highly instructive interview. With an up-date on tools and techniques that D.C. now uses to get the most out of his rock supply, this production picks up where the classic Art Of Flint Knapping Video Companion leaves off. Covered are the differences between copper and antler billets, pressure flakers and punches, in what situations they are best used and how to use them to work difficult flakes, and especially, those odd, square edged chunks you thought would never make anything worth while. Watch this video and get the answers to those nagging questions that are keeping you from taking that “next step!” Running time, 3 hour 40 minutes.  $30.

Roasting Rocks: The Art and Science of Heat Treating Revised Edition By D.C. Waldorf.  Back in print, is this new, revised edition of a very useful little book that was produced in 1998 to accompany a video tape by the same title. The video is no longer available, in fact, what was in the video is in the book, plus a whole lot more! Covered are what materials need heat treating, how it works, methods and appliances used for cooking rocks - including the primitive ways, and recipes for many of the rocks commonly used by knappers today. A must-have if you plan on roasting your own rocks! Comb bound, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, 22 pages. Price, $8. each

Much of material here-in has been distilled from the Waldorf’s un-published Danish files and should help to clarify the picture of the flint technology of Southern Scandinavia before the Dagger Period. It is roughly divided into two parts: a simplified overall view of the prehistory and artifacts before the Late Neolithic, and a detailed description of square-sectioned axes and how they were made. Comb bound, 64 pages, with many never-before-published drawings by the late Val Waldorf. If you have D.C.’s guide to daggers, you’ll definitely want to add this one to your collection. Price, $15

FLINT KNAPPING TOOLS                                           Presenting the full line of reasonably priced knapping tools from Red Rock Lithics.   Plus D. C. Waldorf's High Speed Magnum Copper Boppers.

RED ROCK LITHICS COPPER BOPPERS. These reasonably priced "copper boppers" [weight forward, lead filled copper cap billets] shown below, are made by Dave Parker of Red Rock Lithics and I am proud to make them available on my website. They were the ones I used while I was learning to master this type of tool after 40 years with antler billets. They were written about in an appendix in The Art Of Flint Knapping: Fifth Edition, featured in three of my latest DVD's, and Angela Parker's Flintknapping: 100 Pounds Of Attitude DVD. Also, see my extensive article in The Best Of CHIPS, The Fourth Five Years, pages 48-55. Presently, these boppers come in four sizes. Note: the sizes listed are the sizes of the inside diameter of the pipe the cap fits over which is smaller than the actual dimensions of the outside of the cap, and the number of rings around the handle indicate this size in 1/4 inch increments as in 3 rings for 3/4 inch and so on.  However, to give you an idea of the true size of the tool head I have also given the actual outside diameter in brackets. When ordering boppers please go by the smaller, un-bracketed size!

3/4 inch [1 inch actual diameter] used for preforms 3 inches on down, and for detail and finish of larger points. Price, $8 each.

1 inch [1 1/4 inch] used on early stage preforms 4 to 6 inches, and on tuff unheated material in smaller sizes. Price, $10 each.

1 1/4 inch [1 1/2 inch] for middle stage work on large preforms 6 inches and up. Price, $12 each.

1 1/2 inch [1 3/4 inch] for heavy early stage spalling and preforming of medium to large pieces up to about 10 or 12 inches, and for tougher flint in medium size pieces. Price, $16 each.

When ordering you might want to keep in mind the the above recommendations for the size and hardness of the materials you will be working most often. Much of my work is on heat treated pieces from 1 to 6 inches, and therefore, the boppers in my tool kit that see the most use are the two smaller ones. For heavy spalling and preform work, daggers, axes, and really big points the two bigger boppers and a huge custom made 2 1/4 incher [not available at present] get the job done. So consider getting an extra bopper in the sizes you figure you will use the most, and remember, I have replacement caps, see below.

REPLACEMENT CAPS.  Replacement caps available:  3/4 inch, $2 each.    1 inch, $3 each.    1 1/4 inch, $4 each.    1 1/2 inch, $5 each.

RED ROCK LITHICS PRESSURE FLAKERS. The Red Rock Lithics high quality pressure flakers shown below feature wood, or Delran handles, metal collets with two Allen type set screws, or pin vice that will hold a variety of tip sizes. Along with your boppers, pick and choose those pressure flakers that will best fit your needs and you will have created the ideal tool kit!

Shearing Tool & Mini Bopper. This little tool has a flat shear on one end, a lead filled copper cap on the other, and a rubber covered handle in between!  Great for shearing off sharp edges, shaping bird point blanks and minute percussion edge preparation. Price, $5 each.

Pin Vice Pressure Flaker. Will take a 1/8 inch diameter copper wire or nail, or any smaller size copper or steel nails. Great for  pressure flaking small arrow points, fine detail work on larger pieces, and notching and serrating. Comes with an assortment of nails that can be modified by sharpening, or flattening for a custom tip for that special notching job! Price, $15 each.

8d 1/8 inch Pressure Flaker. Used for detail work, small arrow points and notching. The companion to the heavier pressure flakers below. Comes with Allen wrench and extra tip. Price, $13 each.

3/16 inch Pressure Flaker. Used for most medium pressure flaking jobs on all sizes of points. Comes with Allen wrench and extra tip. Price, $13 each.

20 inch Ishi Stick with  3/16 inch steel collet. Has a flexible, 3/4 inch diameter Delran handle that is a generous 20 inches long! For those long flakes in tough materials, or for a little more "mechanical advantage" for better control, this tool can't be beat! Comes with Allen wrench and extra tip. Price, $25 each.

BACK IN STOCK!

D.C. Waldorf's High Speed Magnum Copper Boppers.  Designed and used by DC "his self." These are high quality, custom made, weight forward, lead filled copper cap billets with knob ended handles.  The handles are relatively short for precise control while the knob lets the user shift his grip much farther toward the end than with other boppers. With this feature the tool can be guided with the forefinger while the knob is held by the middle finger allowing the billet to be "whipped" at a higher speed without loosing accuracy, or having it fly out of your hand! The result is longer flakes in the tougher Baltic, British and Texas flints with the precision control necessary to deal with the softer, more sensitive materials like highly heat treated Burlington chert and obsidian.  Set of three includes small 1/4 inch, medium 1 inch, and large 1 1/4 inch sizes which will work for all, but the very largest of preforms. Prices for single boppers are: 1/4 inch, $15; 1 inch, $18; 1 1/4 inch, $22: or $50 per set of three.

Waldorf and his friends. Running time 1 hours 56 minutes. DVD $25.

Making The Clovis Point With Jim Redfear. Jim Redfearn is one of the few knappers in the world who can  consistently produce Clovis fluted points in a traditional manner, fluting them by hand,  without  the use of jigs, fixtures or holding devises. Here he shows you the techniques needed to produce a biface from a slab of Fort Payne chert. This can be a real challenge for the average knapper.  He explains everything in detail, including preparing the platform for fluting, holding positions, etc. This tape is directed at those who want to use copper billets. Great footage with lots of close-ups.1 hr 25 minutes. Price, $25.

Making A Dalton Point With Jim Redearn. In his second video, Jim Redfearn, one of the premier knappers in the country, works an unusually difficult piece of chert. It’s a long, narrow, thick block of Burlington with square edges and surface concavities. He magically transforms it into a eight-inch Sloan Dalton. This video is directed at those who want to work with copper billets and covers the entire production from start to finish, with lots of close-ups. Beginners will enjoy the skill demonstrated and appreciate his step by step explanations of each process. 1 hour, 38 minutes. Price, $25.

Making The Hardin Point With Jim Redfearn. This video is also for those who want to do percussion flaking with copper tools. Jim shows you how to make a perfect Hardin point using copper capped billets, now affectionately called “copper boppers,” while he carefully explains edge preparation, striking angles and tool use. Watch as he turns a spall of Burlington chert into a work of art. Directed at beginning to intermediate knappers, even the advanced will appreciate his skill. 1 hour, 14 minutes. Price, $ 25.

Calf Creekin' With Jim Redfearn. Master knapper Jim Redfearn specializes in many Archaic point types but the Calf Creek with its deep, narrow notches is one of the most difficult. In this video he finds and uses local creek cobbles to make these interesting and delicate points. During the reduction process he explains every move from edge preparations, holding positions and sequences of flake removals for water worn chert pebbles. The secretes of deep notching are revealed, using two different styles and tools: power pressure with an Ishi stick that has a long flat point and indirect percussion with a modified copper nail. 1 hr. 8 minutes. Price, $25.

Making The Cahokia And Ishi Points With Jim Redfearn. Here, in Jim’s fourth release, we get to watch the production of small arrow points, in particular the “Cahokia” and “Ishi” styles. While Jim is a master who can produce any style of point, from bird points to monster blades, he recommends that would-be knappers start out by learning to make small points like these. It saves material and frustration. Jim details every step, including the delicate notching procedures. He uses copper billets and copper pressure flakers.1 hr. 30 minutes. Price, $25.

Flintknapping: 100 Pounds Of Attitude With Angela Parker. In this video, made with women, children and those of small stature in mind, Angela Parker shows the right attitude when it comes to choosing tools, technique and style. What works for her is brilliantly demonstrated when she uses copper tools to make a small triangular arrow point and then a large dovetail, all the while explaining in detail every step and stage. If nothing else, this video should serve as an inspiration to all who would like to try this fascinating craft, but are a little bit intimidated because of gender or size. 1 hr. 56 minutes. Price, $25.

Ishi Rediscovered: Resurrecting The Secrets Of The Past With Jim Williams. In his groundbreaking new video, Jim Williams takes you step by step through the proper manufacturing sequence of an Ishi point. These findings were made upon Jim’s visit to the Phoebe A. Hurst Museum at U.C. Berkeley California. While there, he had the privilege of personally examining the Ishi collection including Ishi’s tools and debitage. The discoveries Jim made were truly remarkable and have never been revealed until now.1 hour 30 minutes. Price, $20.

Found! A Cache of Limited Edition Embossed Porcelain Mugs Featuring the Art Work of the Late Val Waldorf!

THE STORY BEHIND THE MUGS.

The idea for the coffee mugs was hatched around 1995 when Dane and Mary Martin, the co-producers of CHIPS magazine and our long time friends and partners, still lived in Arlington, Washington. During our visit that year, Dane showed Val and I samples of these mugs that were to be found in tourist traps all over the state. As a fund-raiser, the Lake Stevens Police were selling these same mugs with their badge on them. Dane, being a reserve officer in that force, was the instigator behind this, so he already knew the facts and figures when he made his pitch for a series of our own mugs featuring Val's art.

Originally, the series was to commemorate the archaeological periods and associated classic point types along with a scene of an event from that period. Only one thousand mugs for each period were to be made, and then the mold was to be broken! What makes them unique is the way the drawings are actually "embossed" into the glaze and not stenciled on. Thus, the art work will last as long as the mug! For this process Val had to simplify the drawings somewhat, however, the detail is still better than most textbook illustration you see!

The Clovis mug, first in the series, was delivered in 1996, and  advertised in CHIPS Vol. 8, no.2. These were a hit and sold briskly on the old Knapper's Corner web site and just as well at the many knap-ins we attended. After the Martins moved to Missouri in 1998, the next mug depicting a bison hunt and Late Paleo Lanceolate points was issued followed by the third in 2001. This last mug featuring modern knappers was not as well received as the others. Plans for more mugs were on hold as the last were sold and Val was trying to catch up with an ever-increasing work load. Her untimely death in 2005 put an end to any more featuring her drawings. Another mug was issued by the Knappers Corner sometime after her passing with artwork, not near the quality, being done by the makers of the cups. This one also featured more modern knappers.

While cleaning Val's closet, I found several boxes of mugs, and remembered that she had kept a dozen of each for herself as part of the deal for her work. Those offered here are from that cache, and there are fewer than a dozen left of each! Below you will find more information along with the price and the number remaining. Remember, these are the last and they have already become collector's items in their own right! DCW 11/26/11

Clovis Culture Mug featuring a mammoth hunt and points from various well known Clovis sites. Unfortunately, after an extensive search, the original art work, or copies there of, could not be found in the CHIPS archives. So, the photos above, left will have to serve as illustrations. I have to admit, I was the one who came up with the ideas for most of the designs on the mugs, and it was Val's talent that made it happen! The inspiration for the mammoth hunt came from a painting by the fabulous Frank Frazetta. It was of a small quadruped dinosaur being attacked by pygmies in a jungle somewhere. Substitute a mammoth for the dinosaur, and turn the pygmies into very determined Paleo hunters trying to spear the angry beast while setting his hair on fire, and you have a dramatic, yet believable scene! The styles of Clovis points we chose, or those from well known sites were Blackwater Draw, Lamb, Bostrom, Ross, Anzick, Wenatchee, Vial, and Adams. Issued over 15 years ago, who knows how many of the original thousand still survive in one piece! I know for a fact that this one, the most desirable of the three, are rarely seen today, and when they do come up for sale they usually bring a $100, or more!

Clovis Coffee Mug, price $100. I have 8 in stock, so please reserve before purchasing.

Late Paleo Culture Bison Hunters Mug featuring a bison hunt and points from various well known period sites. Here we see extinct long-horned giant bison being driven over a cliff, or "buffalo jump." This technique was still being used by the modern Plains Indians even after they got horses. At the famous Olson-Chubbuck site the bison were driven into a deep ravine and 10,000 years later their bones were found in a mass deposit along with Scotts Bluff type points. The idea for the drawing came from one of my first books about Indians. It was a gift from my dad, and after 50+ years, though worn, I still have it! The line drawings were of the highest quality and Val even liked looking at them. The points featured on the mug are Eden, Scotts Bluff, Plainview, Agate Basin, Allen, Midland, Angostura, Browns Valley, and Folsom. This was the second most popular mug!

Late Paleo Bison Hunters Coffee Mug, price $75. I have 10 in stock, so please reserve before purchasing.

Modern Flint Knappers Mug featuring the work of 14 lithic artists. Released in 2001, this was the last mug in the series of three done by Val. Illustrated are points made by Virgil Tonn, D.C. Waldorf, Kenny Wallace, Jim Spears, Webb Hammond, Steve Behrnes, Bob Thomas, Cole Hurst, Jim Redfearn, Larry Kinsella, Craig Ratzat, Jim Hopper, Gill Chumbley, and Robbie Robinson. All of these fellows were friends of ours who we saw on a regular basis as we made our rounds on the knap-in circuit.

THE ART OF FLINTKNAPPING

THIRD EDITION

By D.C. Waldorf

While re-arranging and cleaning in Val's old studio I found a case of these books still in their shrink wrappers left over from the days when we used to travel a lot and the books had to be well protected. These are from the second printing of the 1984 edition, the so called "dark cover edition," because the cover was printed too dark. It has quite a bit of the same material in it as in the later editions with the chapter on Danish axes and daggers being omitted along with other out of date material. The appendices dealing with modern tools are not a part of this book as they are in the current Fifth Edition, and I feel the information is better presented in my latest book. Whether one is better than the other you can judge for yourself, but only if you have both books! Paper back, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, 76 pages. Limited quantity in stock, but I am offering them at their original price of $15. Per copy!

Lithic industries at dover

By  Dr. R. M. Gramly

The flintknappers at Dover, Tennessee, manufactured a variety of flint tools for a broad market. These items appear as far away as Cahokia Mounds in St. Louis and Spiro in Oklahoma. Excavations at this site revealed some insights into the world of the commercial flintknapper 1000 years ago. Lavishly illustrated with the incredibly detailed pen and ink drawings of the late Val Waldorf. For fans of her work, this is the first in a series of books she illustrated for Dr. Gramly. This book is OUT OF PRINT and limited quantities are left, so it’s already a collectors item. 8 1/2 by 11 inches, 138 pages. Price, $20. each.

THE SPIRO MOUND:

A PHOTO ESSAY

By Larry and Christopher Merriam

With Photographs from the Collection of Dr. Robert E. Bell

This large hard cover book tells the story of the destruction of the famous Spiro Mound by commercial artifact hunters at the height of the Great Depression. A young Robert Bell was there with his camera and photographed as much as he could as it was coming out of the ground. Larry and Christopher Merriam, long time friends of Dr. Bell, wrote this book using the material from Bell's collection while gathering as much from other sources as they could. It is the premier work on the subject, and for nothing else, a must-have for the hundreds of old photos of the site and the many splendid Mississippian era artifacts that come out of the mound. Of interest to the knapper are the ceremonial flint pieces such as dance swords, maces, large knives and thousands of incredible arrow points. 8 1/2 by 11 inches, 407 pages. Price, $36 each.

These are new and I only have 2 copies!
